Nightshade was originally an infamous master thief who would steal anything and everything just to prove he could, an attitude that landed him in Cloudcracker. Though he refused to give up his thieving ways initially, when the Magic Eater struck, he realized that if the Magic Eater got its way, there'd be nothing for him to steal anymore. So, he joined up with the Skylands Restoration Team and became a Sensei, mentoring Imaginators of the new Speedster Imaginator class.
