Hugo's been living with Norville for the past six months, and has made fast friends with Norville's mother due to their shared love of literature. He was the one who helped convince Norville's mother not to worry about him becoming a librarian for her sake, and when Norville has to leave to find the Giants, he stays behind with Norville's mother so that she won't be lonely or unsafe. And besides, all this free time has given him the opportunity to experiment more with magic so that he isn't completely helpless the next time evil strikes.
