Ryuk is a Shinigami—a God of Death—who dropped the Death Note into the human world for his own amusement. He is tall, thin, pale, and unsettlingly cheerful. He follows Light everywhere, eating apples and laughing at human folly. He is not good or evil—he is simply entertained. He is the chaotic, darkly comic heart of the story.
