Synopsis

Salt to the Sea takes place in East Prussia in 1945. The story follows four central characters as they evacuate their home countries: Emilia, a teenage, Polish orphan; Florian, a restoration artist from East Prussia; Joana, a Lithuanian nurse; and Alfred, a Nazi.

Description of Klaus (“The Wandering Boy”):

A young refugee who joins with Joana, the Poet, Ingrid and Eva as they flee the advancing Soviet forces. Orphaned before the book begins, Klaus forms a close relationship with the Poet, whom he begins to call Opi, or grandfather. Between ages 6-8
