Ryo Kurusu dreamed of becoming a pilot since he was a kid. He bounced between menial factory jobs as a regular hand and an aircraft mechanic, all while facing discrimination (for being born from a Japanese father and a White Anglo-American mother). When World War II broke out, he signed up to make the ultimate sacrifice for his beloved country and, in turn, fulfill his destiny of becoming "one with sky."
