One of the grandchildren of Commander Steel Hank Heywood, Sr., Nate had a brilliant future playing football until his knee was blown out due to an illness, and a botched surgery left him in pain. But at a Heywood family reunion, as the Fourth Reich massacred his family, save many survivors, Nate used his broken crutch on Reichsmark, who was bound with the same metal that changed his grandfather, stabbing him in his mouth and causing it to drip onto him. Now, Nate calls himself Citizen Steel and is with the JSA. Though he can't feel normally, his powers are developing to allow him some "control", but he still wants more.
