Maeja was an enslaved caretaker in one of the earliest Ravari-run labor colonies. She raised dozens of Maruun children over the years; some hers by blood, most not. Graves and Evara were two of them. She protected them however she could, hiding food, stealing medicine, smuggling messages from camp to camp. When the Severance War broke out, she didn’t fight with weapons, she fought by keeping the next generation alive. After the war, she helped build a hidden refuge near the Dust Rim. There, she shelters displaced Maruuns, including Evara, whom she sees as her daughter. Mae watches the world fall apart again with tired eyes. She doesn’t believe in gods, empires, or prophets. She believes in people, and she still believes in Aiden Graves, even if he doesn’t believe in himself.
