Jonathan Crane was a professor at the Gotham City University, but after doing an experiment that killed a student, he was fired and was about to go to jail, but due to an inconsistence in the testimony that put him there, he was released. After being released and pleaded innocent, he obtained a work at Arkham Asylum as a psychiatrist. The testimony of many prisioners about the Batman inspired him into putting fear in people's souls, but instead of helping the innocent, Crane only became interested in scaring people and watch their reactions, what excited him.
