Louis Cannon is a skeevy loser who's way past his prime. When he gets cornered in an alleyway by some loansharks, on the wrong side of a knife, he teleports? to the void, a quick flash, there and back. Freaked out and running from loan sharks and cops, he goes to his much more successful ex-girlfriend Ruth Beltz for help. Ruth, who is his sole sturdy support in his life, connects him to her scientist friend she met at college, Charles Arlott.
