Twelve-year-old girl Miranda (Randy) Clay moves to Shadyside with her family and gets transferred to new school just as it's a month and a half to summer vacation. Randy makes new friends to her surprise, but the town is all abuzz about a dead boy named Pete and that every year on his birthday, all the twelve-year-olds in town have to play a game of hide-and-seek with his ghost. Randy listens to facts rather than legends. As Pete's birthday draws near, Randy gets frightened as she gathers more proof that Pete's ghost is real, and that if she loses, Pete will possess her body for a whole year. And Pete does not play fair. And he loves new kids, like Randy.
