Charles and Officer Jenny followed the torchbearers in order to see that they made their way safely to the Plateau. Ash saw the opportunity to carry the torch and wanted to do so. However, Officer Jenny tried to stop him, saying that he looked like a troublemaker. Charles stepped in and defended Ash, while also telling Officer Jenny that how a person looked on the outside wasn't as important as who they were on the inside, and let Ash run with the torch. Although Team Rocket took the torch, Charles revealed he had a lantern just in case the flame got doused. On the opening day of Indigo League, Charles spoke to the trainers they can win as long as they love and trust their Pokémon.
