The most faithful retelling of the Persephone myth ever committed to television. Persephone is portrayed not as a victim of abduction but as a young goddess chafing under the suffocating overprotection of her mother Demeter, drawn to the Underworld by genuine curiosity. She encounters Hades — not as a captor but as an equal: a god who governs with justice, who is deeply lonely in a realm the other Olympians avoid, and who is unpracticed in the expression of what he feels. The pomegranate seeds are her choice — eaten deliberately, having understood their meaning. The series is Persephone's coming-of-age: learning who she is separately from her mother, building her own identity as Queen of the Underworld, and developing a genuine, complicated love with Hades built on mutual respect and intellectual equal footing. Hades throughout is portrayed faithfully to mythology: patient, fair, deeply honorable, and genuinely devoted. He never manipulates, never coerces, never performs drama. His tragedy is simply that he is the god nobody visits willingly, and that the person who finally does changes everything.
