The film begins with us learning how and why Alexei Shostakov escaped from the Russian Super Soldier program. No longer useful to the Russian military, he was fired and locked away. With the help of Melina Vostokoff, he escapes prison. In the present we see Alexei learning why he was no longer useful. He was replaced. And this replacement called Vanguard now has a team. The Winter Guard. Together with his daughter Yelena Belowa and partner Melina, he sets out to find the team's origins and confronts his past.
