May Bird was born in White Moss Manor in Briery Swamp, West Virginia. As a young child, she has a cat named Legume. However, Legume dies and May, depressed, takes to wearing black and being alone. She is often teased by her classmates because she is somewhat eccentric, and her new cat, Somber Kitty, is her only friend. She is ten-year-old at the two books, by book three she's thirteen. May Bird is described as having black bobbed hair, large brown eyes, being very skinny, and knobby knees. She often plays in the words behind her house, pretending to be a brave "warrior princess" and dressing up. May, however, is extremely shy and afraid, making an unlikely hero for the Ever After.
