Mrs. Wormwood, Matilda and Michael's mother, is portrayed as obsessed with her appearance and American television, overweight, and lacking interest in education. She is often absent, uninvolved, and complacent when her husband mistreats Matilda. Mrs. Wormwood believes women should focus on looks, marry well, and mocks education. She is disrespectful towards Miss Honey when discussing Matilda's education and convinces Mr. Wormwood to let Matilda stay with Miss Honey instead of going to Spain.
