Hortensia is an older girl at Crunchem Hall Primary School who is not conventionally attractive due to her eating habits and a boil on her nose. Despite this, she becomes a heroic figure to Matilda and Lavender by sharing pranks she has played on Miss Trunchbull, like putting syrup on her chair or itching powder in her knickers. Miss Trunchbull retaliates by locking Hortensia in the Chokey, a closet lined with dangerous objects. Hortensia's stories inspire Lavender to play a prank of her own.
