Cassia has a bright, analytical mind that is constantly searching for patterns--earning her the optimal assignment as a "sorter" for the Society. Yet when she starts to spend time with Ky Markham over the summer, she discovers a spark of creativity where she least expected, learning not just how to sort data, but how to create works of art with her own hands. When the Society discovers that a fully-privileged Citizen is becoming romantically involved with an Aberration, they arrest Ky and send him off to a labor camp. Cassia risks life and limb in pursuit, determined at all costs to be reunited with the boy who changed her life.
