Gloria, a hippopotamus with a passive nature and the voice of reason, was a star attraction at the Central Park Zoo. At Marty the zebra's birthday party, Marty wished to go to the wild, but Gloria, Alex, and Melman tried to convince him that zoo life was better. Marty was unhappy and later that night, he headed to the Terminal Station to take a train to Connecticut. Gloria urged Alex and Melman to help find Marty before anyone noticed, but they were all found and tranquilized alongside chimps Mason and Phil and a troupe of secretive penguins.
