Occupation: Correction Officer Raised in Southern California by working-class parents, Joaquin grew up believing that a stable career was the best way to build a better future. His father worked in construction while his mother was a medical receptionist. He was the first in his immediate family to pursue a career in corrections. He completes his training near the top of his class but has almost no practical experience dealing with the psychological complexities of prison life. He enters Blackridge believing professionalism and compassion can coexist without conflict. His inability to maintain that distinction becomes the defining tragedy of his story.
