Synopsis

After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean is freed by Javert, the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

Description of Monsieur Thénardier (Jondrette):

Father of five children: two daughters, Éponine and Azelma, and three sons, Gavroche and two unnamed younger sons. As an innkeeper, he abuses Cosette as a child and extorts payment from Fantine for her support, until Valjean takes Cosette away. He becomes bankrupt and relocates under the name Jondrette to a house in Paris called the Gorbeau house, living in the room next to Marius. The husband associates with a criminal group called "the Patron-Minette", and conspires to rob Valjean until he is thwarted by Marius. He is arrested then moves to the US
