His full name reflects his complete identity within Andalusian Islamic culture: he speaks Arabic and the Romance vernacular, participates in the extraordinary intellectual life of the Córdoba court, and is one of the Caliph's most trusted diplomatic voices for relations with the Christian kingdoms of the north. When a treaty with the Kingdom of León requires a diplomatic marriage, Mansur is sent north with a proposal — and finds himself arranging not another man's marriage but his own, to Inés de León, a Leonese princess who has been educated in the unusual tradition of her learned grandmother and approaches the cross-cultural marriage with curiosity rather than dread.
