Synopsis

Kaya knows in her heart that her beautiful Appaloosa mare, Steps High, is the fastest horse in the herd. But when boasting leads to a daring bareback race, Kaya pushes Steps High too hard. She puts herself and the horse in danger and earns a terrible nickname for being untrustworthy. Kaya vows to be a girl her horse and her people can trust. When enemy raiders storm Kaya's village, she tries to save Steps High but gets taken captive herself, along with her sister. All Kaya can think of is escape, but how?

Description of Speaking Rain (Tennése Uéket):

Speaking Rain is the adopted sister and cousin of Kaya'aton'my. Speaking Rain is blind due to an illness, and so she "sees" with her other senses. At first, she relies on Kaya for support and comfort, as she is always uncertain about where she is heading. Speaking Rain is called "strong" by Kaya's grandmother and mother, and has a powerful will that does not give up. Speaking Rain is shown to keep the vows she makes. Speaking Rain also has a good sense of how people truly feel. She is described as a slim girl with cloudy eyes.
