Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff (b. 9 April 1865) is a German ex-military officer and right-wing politician. As one of the most controversial figures in recent German history, Ludendorff rose to unexpected prominence as the celebrated victor of the Battle of Liège and the Battle of Tannenberg at the beginning of the Weltkrieg in 1914. Over the course of the subsequent years, Ludendorff, in his role as aide-de-camp to Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, amassed vast political power due to his extraordinary strategical planning capabilities.
