Martin Brody is the former sheriff of Amity Beach, but had to step down in 1978 after he had a breakdown. He was extremely traumatized by the events of the 1975 shark attacks, and passed down that trauma to his son, Michael. When Martin learns that his granddaughter is somewhere in the ocean after news of a shark attack breaks loose, he helps Michael, Sean, and Francis search for her.
