A middle aged man, Paul Carver (Adam Sandler), tragically loses his wife and only son from a fatal car accident after his son's high school graduation. Since his son, Ryan, had just recently turned 18 they had planned to enter a 5v5 basketball tournament with a prize of $5,000 to the winning team. Now that they're gone he decides to get a team together and play it in memory of his wife and son, the tournament is nationally televised to the whole of America and soon enough the nation begins rallying behind Paul as his story is shared with the country. Thousands of people drive from all around the country to see him play, Paul and his team of friends shock the nation as they knock out the top teams setting up a finals matchup of them vs the previous year's champions.
