The series follows Katar Hol, a Thannagarian sent to Earth with his partner Shayera to observe the planet. However, their ship suffers mechanical failure upon entering Earth's atmosphere and crashes. During the crash, the two are separated. While searching for Shayera, Katar discovers a connection to Earth, experiencing visions of his ancient life and uncovering his past lives and his bond with Shayera. Making both old and new allies and facing old and new enemies, Katar embarks on an adventure far greater than he expected, rediscovering himself and finding a new home on Earth.
