Samuei Kuroki was Margaret's great-great-grandfather. The Kuroki were a renowned group of sorcerers from northern Asia. This brotherhood was known as the Kuroki Order, where they met periodically to accept new members, either from outside the group or newly born Kuroki, to become new sorcerers. The Kuroki were known for doing good deeds, but Samuei became corrupted by his desire for more power. Consequently, he chose to use black magic, which made him more powerful than his own brothers. This forced them to imprison him outside the plane of existence, turning him into a ghost. The artifact sought in the story is responsible for imprisoning him in ghost form. Throughout this story, Samuei was watched over by future generations of the Kuroki, now known as the Liu, but the untimely death of one of these guardians granted him partial freedom. Once free, he possessed Ethan's grandmother to approach the house in on the eve of the wedding, thus facilitating their search for the artifact, also without counting on the presence of our protagonist.
