After they complete a deal with the Kree, the Guardians of the Galaxy are found and approached by a man claiming to be Quill's father, J'son of Spartax. His planet is on the brink of destruction, if they cannot find a worthy challenger for the Champion of the Universe, one of the elders of the universe on his eternal quest to find the strongest fighters. J'son has located the Black Vortex, a weapon capable of putting up a decent fight, and asks the Guardians to fetch it. However, the Kree find out about it and send their own people after it.
