Hal Jordan, an Air Force pilot, follows a glowing green light into the remains of a spaceship crash and discovers the alien dying inside it: Abin Sur. Then, Abin tells Hal all he needs to know for now and the ring latches itself to Hal's finger, teleporting him to Oa. There he learns what it means to be a Green Lantern and he has to decide if he is up for the responsibility of being the protector of our whole space sector. He is trained by Abin Sur's former apprentice and close friend, Thaal Sinestro, and he gets to know a few other important Lanterns like Kilowog and Tomar-Re. Hal's first mission is to stop the Manhunters, created by the very Guardians of the Universe he now answers to, all while Sinestro talks about how the Green Lantern Corps should operate.
