The story begins with the great grandfather of William Hand, during an exploration to the Arctic in 1936, there he finds the ruins of an ancient temple to a deity called Nekron. Now in the present, William Hand is the head of the family business, this gives him the resources to continue the investigation of his ancestor with the help of the archaeologist Vandal Savage; together the villains create a device able to steal the energy of the Green Lantern's ring and use it to unleash Nekron.
