A man, his wife, and his kid are traveling in the desert of Texas to meet up with their grandfather. Along the way, they accidentally run over a coyote pup with the name "Max" engraved on it. Unbeknownst to them, this puts them in the crosshairs of a mischievous coyote spirit known by the locals as Goofy.
