Venice, 1755. Giacomo Casanova has returned to the city, and the precarious balance on which the Republic rests, now close to decadence, risks shattering and degenerating into chaos. The international political scenario is in a transitory phase of delicate alliances and the disastrous outcome of the Second Morea War has emptied the coffers of the Serenissima. Doge Francesco Loredan is in very poor health, and the inquisitor Pietro Garzoni plots behind him to obtain consent within the Council of Ten and thus influence the succession to the Doge. His forbidden dream is to arrest the swordsman seducer, and to do this he puts his nasty servant Zago after him.
