Rex was infected by Nanites and was transformed into an Evo, a human with the power to grow machines out his body, but unlike most Evos, Rex can grow them to a specific need and can retract them as needed back into his body, and he can communicate with other machines. These things led to him being recruited by Providence, an agency on the trail of Van Kleiss, an evil Evo.
