In the frozen Arctic, Captain Robert Walton rescues Victor Frankenstein, a dying scientist pursuing a mysterious creature across the ice. Victor recounts the story of his obsession with conquering death: after losing his mother, he studies science and forbidden natural philosophy, eventually creating life from stolen human remains. Horrified by the being he has brought to life, Victor abandons him, leaving the Creature to discover the world alone. Hidden beside a rural cottage, the Creature secretly learns language, literature, compassion, and the meaning of family, only to be violently rejected when his appearance is revealed. After humanity repeatedly answers his kindness with fear and cruelty, he turns against his creator, killing Victor’s young brother and framing an innocent woman. When Victor confronts him in the Alps, the Creature begs for a companion so he will no longer be alone. Victor agrees, but destroys the unfinished female Creature when he fears the consequences of creating a new race. In revenge, the Creature murders Victor’s closest friend and later kills Elizabeth on Victor’s wedding night, leaving Victor with nothing but grief and vengeance. Their pursuit carries them across Europe and into the Arctic, where Victor finally dies aboard Walton’s ship. The Creature secretly boards the vessel, mourns the death of the man who created and abandoned him, and vows to end his own life in a funeral pyre. As he disappears into the frozen wilderness, creator and creation remain bound together by the same tragedy: a life brought into the world without love, responsibility, or a place to belong.
