Norway, 1893. In a remote fishing village nestled between towering fjords, Ingrid Thorsdottir is cursed—or so the townsfolk believe. Every man she has ever courted has either vanished, gone mad, or been crushed by falling logs. Determined to prove she is not cursed, Ingrid sets her sights on Erik Jorgensen (Nicholas Hoult), an awkward but charming tax collector from the city, who arrives in the village to enforce a new government levy on fish. Erik, utterly out of his depth in this superstitious, axe-wielding village, quickly becomes entangled in its bizarre customs—where courtship involves competitive eel wrestling, death omens are taken very seriously, and love letters must be written in blood. As Ingrid and Erik’s romance blossoms in the cold Nordic air, Erik begins experiencing strange hallucinations—whispers in the wind, shadowy figures watching from the cliffs, and dreams of a woman drowning beneath the ice. As Erik falls deeper in love with Ingrid, he begins losing his grip on reality—was he always meant to be here? Is the village real? Is he? The night before their wedding, Erik receives a chilling revelation: Ingrid’s last suitor never left—he’s still alive beneath the ice of the fjord, calling out in Erik’s own voice.
