Reed Richards impressed his parents with inventions that made them wealthy but lost his mother young. At 14, he earned multiple awards and dreamed of building a starship, a project Ben Grimm promised to help him with. Reed earned Victor von Doom's wrath and Sue Storm's love. After graduation, he worked for the US military, positioning him to realise his dream. When the government cut funding, Reed took Ben, Sue, and her brother Johnny for a test flight. Sadly, Reed failed to account for shielding against cosmic rays. They were bombarded by radiation in space. The ship crashed on Earth and they discovered they’d been mutated, each gaining special abilities. Richards founded the Fantastic Four
