Orphan Benjamin J. Grimm grew up on New York’s Yancy Street and escaped his rough upbringing through a college football scholarship. At Empire State, he befriended genius Reed Richards and promised to pilot Richards' future starship. After college, Grimm served in the military and gained astronaut experience. Reconnecting with Richards, Grimm agreed to pilot an illicit test flight of Richards' spacecraft with Sue and Johnny Storm. In space, cosmic rays bombarded the four, and Grimm crash-landed the ship back on Earth. The radiation transformed Grimm into a hulking, boulder-skinned being dubbed the Thing. Grimm and his companions then formed the Fantastic Four.
