After the Fantastic Four's transformation, Victor von Doom has spent years studying the mysterious Negative Matter that gave him and the Four their powers. Believing it to be the source of his cosmic abilities, Victor has never realized the truth: the Negative Matter inside him is keeping him alive, and his powers are slowly killing him. Now running out of it, Doom returns to Latveria and begins constructing a massive particle accelerator capable of generating enough energy to tear open a doorway into the Negative Zone. In New York, Reed Richards meets Tony Stark, who seeks his help developing a new generation of Arc Reactor technology. Meanwhile, the Four's lives continue alongside Willie Lumpkin, Alicia Masters and Wyatt Wingfoot. When Reed detects massive energy consumption and strange electromagnetic, gravitational and seismic disturbances originating from Latveria, the team investigates. They soon discover Doom's accelerator and realize its purpose: he intends to force his way into the Negative Zone, where he can obtain the Negative Matter necessary to survive. The Fantastic Four travel to Latveria, hoping to stop Victor and reason with him. They fight through his labyrinth, Royal Guard and armies of Doom Bots, but ultimately fail. The accelerator reaches full power and tears open the Negative Zone, nearly destroying Earth. Doom's foresight saves the planet when a built-in failsafe destroys the machine and closes the doorway. But Doom's victory is not what it seems. As he confronts Reed, the doorway suddenly reopens. Bentley Wittman emerges, transformed into the Maker, the enforcer of Annihilus, ruler of the Negative Zone. Wittman reveals that Doom's experiment has shattered the dimensional barrier that once imprisoned Annihilus. Earth is now accessible to him, and Annihilus intends to make it an extension of the Negative Zone. The Fantastic Four have failed to stop Doom—and unleashed something far worse.
