Lanaya is the apprentice, or First, of Keeper Zathrian. Her parents worked for a human merchant. When she was still a child, their caravan was attacked by bandits and she was the only survivor. She was forced to 'serve' the bandits for years. When a Dalish scout passed the bandit camp, the bandits killed him. The clan's keeper, Zathrian, found his body and tracked down his killers, slaying them all. He took pity when he saw Lanaya, and took her back to the clan, where she chose to remain. Becoming his First was difficult for Lanaya, but over time, Lanaya proved herself competent and worthy of the post, and any prejudices from the clan faded away.
