The American version of Doctor Who started in 1963. It ran on CBS until 1989 before being picked up by FOX in the 90's and then HBO in the 2000's. Much like the actual Doctor Who series, the doctor is a revolving role that changes with each era.
The doctor travels in a 1960's US metal and glass telephone booth that can travel through space and time. The telephone booth appears empty from the outside and the door is locked. However, when the doors are open the actual interior of the Doctor's TARDIS is revealed. It is truly bigger on the inside. read more

The Master was recast since this was on Prime Time television now CBS needed a bigger name to play the villain to Gene Wilder.
