Time is running out. The Web of Time has cracked & the universe is dying. The Doctor & Jean are summoned to Gallifrey by the Lady President Romana, where they theorise on how to save both the universe & Jean. They discover that the only way to save both is to use a machine created by the founding fathers of Gallifrey which is trapped in another universe.
