James Sunderland is an office clerk, married to Mary Shepherd-Sunderland. His wife tragically died to an illness three years prior to the events of Silent Hill 2. During the events of Silent Hill 2, James Sunderland receives a letter from his late wife, telling him to meet her in their "special place" in Silent Hill. Upon arrival, he uncovers many clues about the truth of his disturbing past. He also meets Maria, a mysterious woman who has the uncanny resemblance of his wife. Eventually, he finds himself sinking deeper and deeper into the unknown, and toward a despair from which he may never return.
