Schmitz was one of the only surviving G.U.N. agents that went to the ARK and arrest Dr. Gerald Robotnik and the other scientists, also capturing Project Shadow. When he saw a little girl around 10 protecting the alien, he only pointed the gun he had in his hand, but didn't know the safety was off. He'd never willingly hurt an innocent girl. But when he tried to convince her to let him have Project Shadow, before Shadow went down to Earth, he shot Maria in the chest. G.U.N. though Maria's death was a blessing, and that struck Schmitz hard. So, he quit and made sure he'd never get involved with the agents of cruelty-incarnate known as G.U.N. ever again.
