As a sparkling, or child,, he lost his family secretly to Megatronus Prime and Megatron so he was forced to work underneath the stadium and patch up surviving gladiators, which is what he does now. He even quotes that he wouldn't have made it if he wasn't so good at patching up wounds. But when Megatronus figured out he was fixing Ariel's wounds from an accident at the docks that he caused, he let Megatron choose to kill Ratchet in the arena for sport. But once he was saved by Orion Pax, he found hope. And stuck by Orion's side ever since.
