HBO Original Series
The Battle of Actium is a naval catastrophe for Cleopatra and Antonius. Octavian's fleet defeats their combined forces, and Antonius, devastated and believing Cleopatra has betrayed him, flees to Egypt. The season follows the aftermath of this defeat as Cleopatra desperately tries to hold her kingdom together against Octavian's advancing forces. She negotiates, she strategizes, she considers betraying Antonius to save Egypt — but ultimately, her love for him is stronger than her pragmatism. When Octavian's army breaches the gates of Alexandria, Cleopatra makes the final decision: she will not be paraded through Rome as a captive. She will not allow her children to become footnotes in someone else's history. The final episodes are haunting, beautiful, and inevitable. Antonius dies first, in Cleopatra's arms. Cleopatra follows, choosing her death on her own terms. The series ends not with her death but with the world she leaves behind — Egypt absorbed into Rome, her children scattered, but her legend immortal. The last image is of her golden serpent diadem, fallen on the sand of Alexandria, as Rome marches forward.
