In the year of 2221, or 234 by the Ember Reckoning, the underground city of Ember endures but barely. Built after the Great Nuclear War of 1983,Ember is powered by an immense generator that supplies the electrical needs of its people. Yvain Harrow,who wishes to help repair the generator,is assigned as a messenger instead,while messenger-desirous Raya Mayfleet is assigned as a pipe fitter.
