Vector had started detective work to put weight on his claims on how Robotnik is responsible for the bank robberies pulled off. He believes he was doing it to find money to build his robots. After adopting Espio, that's when his soft-spot was shown. But being a starting detective agency with only himself and Espio doesn't pay the bills, so that's why they sent off to look for a job. Vector had gotten in a fight with Espio on how he started to look money-happy and greedy, and not focusing on what his team needs. Although that looks like it, Vector decides to make up for it once he finds everyone.
