After losing her position as an Air Force pilot because of her reckless behavior, Carol Danvers accepts a security position aboard a S.W.O.R.D. orbital research station, where she meets Dr. Walter Lawson, secretly the Kree warrior Mar-Vell. When Skrull agents attack the station, an experimental faster-than-light engine powered by Tesseract energy explodes, exposing Carol to the Space Stone's energy and mixing her DNA with Mar-Vell's Kree blood. Believing the Kree can help her understand her new abilities, Carol travels to Hala and joins Starforce, becoming a powerful but increasingly reckless soldier in the Kree-Skrull War. However, as she travels across the galaxy, Carol begins questioning the Kree Empire's propaganda and discovers that the Supreme Intelligence has deliberately prolonged the war for its own purposes. Carol's beliefs are shattered further when she learns that Mar-Vell secretly had a son, Dorrek, with a Skrull agent named Anelle. When Dorrek is captured by the Kree, Carol realizes that she has spent her entire life trying to prove her worth to people who never believed in her. During a massive battle between the Kree and Skrulls, Carol fights to rescue Dorrek but eventually realizes that becoming another weapon of war would make her no better than the people manipulating the conflict. She turns against the Supreme Intelligence, protects civilians on both sides, and helps end its control over the Kree. After Mar-Vell sacrifices himself to save her, Carol embraces the identity of Captain Marvel. She returns to Earth briefly to reconcile with Maria before leaving once again to protect worlds across the galaxy that have no heroes of their own.
