Captain Nathaniel Adams was one of the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain, and was also involved with air force intelligence during the Vietnam war. Adams volunteered for a top-secret government experiment. He was bonded to an alien metal and exposed to so much energy that he was taken into the quantum field, from which he did not emerge until a couple of years later. Despite being old, Nathaniel's accident allows him to gain powers and prevents him from aging. Captain Atom is known to be too uptight for some light-hearted heroes but fearless and obeys orders like a proper soldier.
