Season 4 – “A Death in the Family” Gotham is more dangerous than ever, and Batman is beginning to realize that the war on crime is changing him—and everyone around him. When young Jason Todd, a rebellious street kid with a fierce sense of justice, crosses paths with the Dark Knight, Bruce sees both potential and pain in him. Taking Jason under his wing, Batman gives him a new purpose as the second Robin. At first, Jason’s determination brings new energy to the partnership. But unlike Dick Grayson, Jason carries a deep anger toward the criminals who destroyed his childhood. As Batman struggles to teach him restraint, the Joker returns with a plan more personal and devastating than anything he has attempted before. Meanwhile, the Joker becomes obsessed with proving that anyone can be broken under the right circumstances. His experiment targets Commissioner Gordon, abducting him and subjecting him to a horrifying psychological ordeal designed to destroy his faith in justice. As Batman hunts him down, their confrontation forces Bruce to question whether his endless battle against the Joker has any meaning—or whether the two of them are trapped in an endless cycle. Jason’s pursuit of the Joker ultimately leads him into a deadly trap. Desperate to confront the man he believes Batman refuses to truly stop, Jason becomes isolated from his mentor. When the Joker discovers him, the consequences are catastrophic. The season builds toward a devastating finale: Batman arrives too late to save Jason, and Gotham loses its second Robin. Shattered by grief and consumed by guilt, Bruce faces the darkest question of his career: how many people must die before he admits that his war has failed?
